Read an Excerpt from Heidi McLaughlin's Story
The mid-afternoon holiday shoppers walk by the large picture window of my office. The blowing snow, which piles up on the window ledge like a quintessential painting from Norman Rockwell, gives the town of Friendship a classic New England feel.
Like most storefronts in town, the Bank & Trust building has large picture windows that look out onto the town square. Sighing, I stare out the window, hoping to catch a glimpse of Gwen coming out of a store, parking her car, or even walking down the street. I haven’t seen her since I moved out.
The blotter on my desk, with its sporadic notes and dates, piques my attention. Leaning forward, I push a small pile of papers out of the way so I can read what today says. Meet divorce lawyer.
Instant melancholy sets in as I frown at the calendar and what my life has become. A divorce is the last thing I want, but I haven’t done a very good job of showing Gwen that she and our daughter Ruby were important. Are important.
My sports coat hangs on the back of my chair. I grab it, slip my arms into it, and take my long winter coat off the rack. A quick glance at the clock shows me I’m about out of time and need to leave now if I’m going to make my appointment.
It seems colder than when I was outside earlier, and I find myself pulling my coat closer and pushing my hands deep into its pockets. Despite the coat’s thickness, it does nothing to take the bite out of the air or keep the wind from stinging my cheeks.
I cross the street and head up the granite stairs leading to my attorney’s office. The heat inside the building is stifling, and my frozen fingers work to undo my coat. Taking the staircase two steps at a time, the old wood creaks under my weight.
The law office is small but has an odd homey feel. I hang my wool coat and give a slight nod to the receptionist. She smiles, sort of. It’s more like a half smile-half grimace. Living in a small town, everyone knows your business.
“Mr. Sutton, please come in.” Terence Sims has been an attorney longer than I’ve been alive. My parents used him for a few legal transactions, and it only made sense I seek out his help as well. “Have you given much thought to how you want to respond to Gwen’s proposal?” he asks. He swivels in his chair to look at me over the rim of his glasses.
“Honestly, I haven’t looked at it.”
“Why not?”
“Because I don’t want this divorce.”
Terence leans back, and his fingers form a steeple. “Divorce is hard, especially when one party is blindsided. Do me a favor. Talk to Gwen. See if you can work something out that benefits the both of you.”
He has given me an idea. I’ll talk to Gwen, but it won’t be regarding a settlement. I’m going to do what I should’ve done all along, be the husband and father I’m supposed to be.
I’m going to get my family back.

âAnd weâll be right back,â Maddox announced, grabbing my wrist.
He pulled me away, and I went willingly with him. I glanced back at Braeden and he started toward us, but I shook my head, stopping him midstep. Maddox turned the corner, his eyes burning like fire.
âI thought I could get through this, but I canât. Iâm so fucking tired of the lies. I know who you are, Lacey.â
My heart stopped. I pretended to be stupid. âOf course, you know who I am. Stop being silly. We need to get back to the wedding.â
He stepped closer, caging me against the wall, with his lips so close to mine. âNo,â he growled low. âI mean, I know who you are . . . Paige.â Keeping his eyes on mine, he glided a hand down my bare back and reached inside my dress, circling his fingers around my strawberry birthmark. My whole body broke out in chills. âDid you seriously think I wouldnât recognize you?â
âTook you long enough,â I snapped.
âOh, I knew who you were right after you left me in Vegas.â My mouth dropped. âYeah, thatâs right, sunshine. A well-paid private investigator can find out anything.â

âHello?â
âAlexandria, this is Jared from Society X. How are you?â
I gasp and look around, hoping like hell the woman beside me couldnât hear. âYes, hi. Iâm doing good. You?â Grabbing my bottle of water, I hurry off the stair climber to a vacant corner across the room.
âCanât complain. Iâm calling because I have a proposition you might be interested in. You put in your application that youâre open to anything. Is that correct?â
My cheeks burn like fire. âYeah, I guess so. What exactly is this proposition?â
He clears his throat. âI have a client who has particular tastes, or fetishes if you prefer. His partner canât make it tonight, and I need to fill that spot.â
Swallowing hard, my heart races. Iâm nervous just hearing him talk about it. âWhat will I have to do?â
âYou, absolutely nothing. All youâll have to do is lie there on your stomach while your partner massages your backside.â
âYou mean my back?â I ask.
He clears his throat again. âNo, your ass.â
I donât know what comes over me, but I burst out laughing. âYouâre joking, right?â
âNo, Iâm not.â
I hush up quickly. âI honestly didnât know that was a thing. Itâs an interesting concept.â
âIs it something youâd be interested in? You donât have to be naked. Your upper body will be covered by a curtain so you can wear a shirt. However, below your waist, youâll need to wear a thong.â
Keeping a straight face and not laughing is going to be the hardest part of the whole thing. How can someone get off by rubbing someoneâs ass? âSure, put me down. What time do I need to be there?â I say it before even really thinking it through.
âEight oâclock. Iâll see you then,â Jared says.
âAll right.â
We hang up, and I head straight for the gym door. Thereâs no way I can keep something like that a secret from my friends. Once outside, I call Dani.
âWhatâs up, girl?â
I rush to my car and hop inside. âYou will not believe the phone call I just got.â
âWhatâs going on?â
I havenât told her about being a member of Society X yet. âI kind of became a member of Society X.â
âHoly shit,â she squeals. âSeriously? Why didnât you tell me at work today?â
Sighing, I pull out of the parking lot for home. âHonestly, I didnât think Iâd get a request so fast. My contact called me and said he had a proposition for me. And get this, itâs for the play room. The guy wants to massage my ass.â
Daniâs cackle is so loud I have to hold the phone away from my ear. âThatâs priceless. Please tell me you said yes.â
I groan. âUnfortunately. What if I burst out laughing while this dudeâs squeezing my butt cheeks?â
Daniâs laughing so hard Iâm surprised she can even breathe. âI donât know what to say. This is too funny. What kind of freak gets off on someoneâs ass?â
âObviously, the man Iâm about to give my ass to.â Iâm starting to think I made a mistake accepting the proposition. At least, Iâll have a good story to tell later. âWish me luck.â
âGood luck, chickee. I want all the details.â
On the way home, I glance at myself in the mirror. What the hell am I doing?

My phone rang and I thought itâd be Bryce, but it wasnât. âWhat can I do for you, Chief?â
Colton Myers was the chief of police back in Wyoming. His call wasnât unusual, because they often called me and my brothers when there were cases the local PD couldnât solve. âI need your help,â he replied, his voice shaking.
The cab driver pulled up to the airport entrance and I passed him a wad of bills before getting out. âWhatâs going on? Iâm about to get on a flight to head home.â
âGood. Iâll drop these files off with Reed, so you can see them when you get back.â
The din of the bustling city made it hard to hear him, but I could tell he was distraught. âFiles for what?â
He sighed heavily. âYou know how thereâve been missing hikers in Montana?â
âYeah, I saw something about it before I left for New York.â It wasnât uncommon for tourists to sway from the hiking trails or test their limits by doing stupid shit. Most of those people found themselves dead. I liked to climb the cliffs, but I was good at it.
âWeâre missing people here too,â Colton confessed.
âIt happens every year. Why does this case shock you?â Iâd been gone for three weeks, so I hadnât even paid attention to what was going on in Wyoming.
He huffed angrily. âAbout three weeks ago, eight men supposedly went missing in our mountains. Just this morning, I couldnât get a hold of Grace. Her boss also called me and said she never showed up at their meeting last night. Her car is still at the hotel. Itâs like she disappeared.â
âYouâve got to be shitting me,â I growled low.
Grace was his daughter and a good friend of mine. Hell, Iâd wanted to be more than that for quite some time. I only held back from pursuing her out of respect for her father. She was one of the most beautiful women Iâd ever known.
âPlease, Ian. I have to find her.â
Hurrying through the doors, impatience flooded through my veins. âWeâll find her, if itâs the last thing I do . . . I swear.â

Michelle's Review
Aim by L.P. Dover
My rating: 4 of 5 stars Wonderful! I absolutely adore this series. Each book is a standalone but they are so good you'll want to read them all. Aim is my favorite so far. It's thrilling, sexy and will having you guessing the whole time. When Grace comes up missing, her father turns to the only person he feels can find her. Ian has been holding back feelings for Grace for a while so as soon as he finds that she's in trouble he desperately tries to find her. Aim is straight up Criminal Minds or NCIS material. It will have your head spinning with who, what, when and why. I really liked it and enjoyed the mystery and excitement of it. The characters were wonderful and the writing is fabulous.

“Kassidy, I know you’re in there. Please open the door.” There was a sheer curtain over the glass panes and if I moved across the room he’d see me. All I could hear was the thumping of my heart. “Kassidy, please. I need to talk to you. I’m not leaving until I do. You know I won’t.”
“Shit,” I hissed low. He was right. If anyone had the patience to sit around for hours, it was him. He’d done the same thing to me years ago when I told him I wouldn’t go on a date with him. He stayed on my porch for hours and slept on the swing. At the time, I loved his persistence. I wanted to go on a date with him, but I was curious to see how far he’d go. Knowing he wouldn’t leave unless I made him, I thrust the door open, embracing the anger I felt welling in my chest. I needed it to get rid of him. Logan stepped back and I held my breath, taking in the desperate look in his eyes. For a second, I could feel my resolve slip, but then I remembered the hurtful words he said to me in the hospital. “There’s nothing to say, Logan. If you want to say you’re sorry, then say the words and get the hell out of here. Other than that, I have no desire to see or talk to you.” He looked straight into my eyes. “Saying I’m sorry doesn’t even begin to cover it, but I am. I am so fucking sorry for what I did.” “Great, you said it. We’re done here. Goodbye Logan.” I slammed the door on him and locked it. “Dammit, Kassie.” “Don’t call me that!” I shouted, slamming my hand against the door. He moved closer to the door and I stepped back. “I know you’re pissed at me, but I need you to hear me out. I’ll stay out here the whole night if I have to.” “Not if I call the police.” “They’re not gonna be able to do anything to me. At least, not before I get in there myself.” The doorknob wiggled and I gasped. “What are you doing? You can’t come in here,” I growled. “Yes, I can, and I will. If it’s the only way to make you listen I don’t care what I have to do.” He fumbled with the doorknob again and I choked, stumbling back into one of my bar stools. I had no doubt he could get in my house, but I wasn’t going to be in it when he did. Grabbing my phone, I jammed it into my back pocket and raced to my bedroom, locking the door behind me. I had to get out of there fast. I changed into a pair of jeans and fetched my black leather jacket out of my closet so I could put it on. My motorcycle and helmet were in my garage but all I had to do was climb out my window to get to them. “Kassie!” Logan called out. The front door slammed shut and I sucked in a breath; it was time. Opening my window, I carefully slipped out. Logan knocked on my bedroom door and tried my handle. “Kassidy, please come out. I don’t want to do this.” As soon as I was out the window, I raced to my garage. Slamming my helmet on my head, I jumped on my bike and turned the key. The engine roared to life as I revved it and I sped out of the garage as fast as I could. Logan had no idea I could ride, but I wished I could see the look on his face when he saw me. All I knew was that I had to get away from him, and fast. Once out of the driveway, I took a left turn, clearly realizing the lapse in judgment. It was the road I’d avoided ever since Levi died on it. “Dammit,” I cried. My eyes started to water and there was no way I could wipe the tears away with my helmet on and going down the road. The sound of Logan’s bike drew close behind and I panicked. What was I going to do? He gained up to me, clearly not stopping unless I did. More tears fell down my cheeks; especially when I arrived at the spot where Levi was ran off the road. I pulled over and shut off my bike, ripping off my jacket so I could breathe. Logan parked beside me, but I jumped off my bike and walked away from him to the dented guardrail. I took off my helmet and stared at the rubber markings on the metal. My fingers traced the tire marks and I broke down, falling to my knees. My heart felt as if it’d been ripped out my chest. Logan’s hands closed over my shoulders, but I smacked them away. “Don’t touch me.” His touch left my body, but I could feel his warmth as he sat beside. “I didn’t know you could ride.” “Levi and Sean taught me after you left. It helped get my mind off of things.” I tried not to look down in the ravine where Levi was found, but I couldn’t help it. The amount of pain he must’ve felt had to be excruciating. I slammed my hand against the guardrail and sobbed. “I’m gonna miss him too, Kassidy. Levi was a good friend.”
Angrily, I wiped my tears away and scoffed. “How would you know? You left eight years ago and never looked back.”

Dover has written countless novels including her Forever Fae series, the Second Chances series, the Gloves Off series, the Armed & Dangerous series, the Royal Shifters series, and her standalone novel, Love, Lies, and Deception. Her favorite genre to read is romantic suspense and she also loves writing it. However, if she had to choose a setting to live in it would have to be with her faeries in the Land of the Fae.
